Over the next few decades, history’s largest intergenerational wealth transfer will pass more than $30 trillion from Baby Boomers to Millennials and Generation X. Until then, Generation X remains in the middle of an enormous generational wealth disparity, with many in this ‘sandwich generation’ supporting both their adult Millennial children and their elderly Boomer parents. Fortunately, many homeowners aged 62 and older can reduce the financial burden on their adult children by converting their home equity into cash through a reverse mortgage. While reverse mortgages can be a great product to market to Gen X and Boomers as a way to access additional retirement funds, it’s critical that lenders ensure borrowers and their families understand all the requirements reverse mortgages entail.
